Wei Leng is 16 years old and her mum runs a hair-dressing salon down my road.
This evening, Wei Leng and her domestic helper, June, came a-knocking at my gate with a little basket.
There was a tiny little kitten in the basket and he did not look too well.
Wei Leng was hoping I could tell what was wrong with the kitten or better still, if I could take over the kitten, but I can't. I said she'd have to ask her mum to bring the kitten straight away to the vet's.
I knew a mother-cat had given birth recently at her shop, so what happened to the rest of the kittens, I asked? Wei Leng said the mother-cat doesn't know how to look after them so three of them have died.
Oh dear, this didn't sound good, so I said I'd take her and this kitten to the vet's immediately if her mum would let me.
Called our nearest vet, and it had just closed. Tsk...it was sharp 7pm.
Never mind, we'll go to USJ. Our other vet opens till 8.30pm today.
So, Wei Leng and June walked back to ask the mum for permission and soon we were on our way to USJ with "Only One" (that's the name of this kitten as he is the only one left now).
On the way, Wei Leng and June kept saying the mother-cat didn't know how to look after the kittens. One died because it was weak, another because of a broken leg and yet another due to choking.
Well, I said, if the mother-cat doesn't know how to look after, then we must help. We can always learn how to do it.
Only-One looked very tired.
This is June. She's very responsible and very eager to learn.
The vet took a stool sample and gosh...there are LOTS and LOTS of worm eggs. Only-One's belly was also bloated (we suspect it's worms, and just worms and not anything else, please). There has been many, many cases of FIP recently, the vet said. It seems to be FIP-season.
The clinic had run out of dewormer for cats, so the vet's assistant went over to another clinic to buy a bottle.
Only-One was dewormed and another dose was given to June to be administered tomorrow.
The vet also gave some AD to Only-One and he ate it all up.
So, I bought a can of AD for June to feed Only-One since she says the mother-cat isn't keen on feeding anymore. I told June to give small amounts, at regular intervals.
Wei Leng says the mother-cat is only interested in looking at other cats, so I guess it could be time to get her spayed. We'll arrange for that next week.
Only-One's treatment is sponsored from our funds.
We hope we can nurture Wei Leng and June into well-informed and responsible caregivers since there are quite a number of cats around their shop. They are feeding one female cat, Mini. There are many things that they do not know so we had a good chat while I drove them home.
I'll drop in tomorrow and check on Only-One.
