RACCOON GETS HEAD STUCK IN TREE KNOT
Retiree Climbs to the Rescue!
______________________________________
Tuckerton, New Jersey firefighters responded to an unusual distress call recently when the Assistant Fire Chief Lee Eggert’s neighbor flagged him down to help a raccoon in serious need of help.
The raccoon appeared to have gotten stuck in a tree knot to get a nut hidden there by a squirrel. Wriggling and pushing to no avail, the distressed raccoon was unable to break free. Firefighters decided to call in retired conservation officer Wayne Tonnesen. Yes, ‘retirement’ is rarely a permanent thing for those who work with animals.
Tonnesen ascended the tree and carefully chipped away at the tree knot until the hole was large enough for the raccoon to slip free and scurry back down the tree and quickly out of sight. Tonnesen felt confident that the raccoon was unharmed and not in need of veterinary intervention.
The raccoon will live to climb another tree and taste another nut thanks to the quick action of those involved.
