DO SINGAPOREANS WANT WILD PIGS TO BE KILLED?

NO, say Singaporeans, in a survey commissioned by ACRES and conducted independently by Millward Brown early this year. Only 14% of Singaporeans approve of the culling of wild pigs.

Wild pigs are native to Singapore, and part and parcel of our unique ecosystem. They help to increase biodiversity and species richness by rooting at intermediate levels. Rooting also accelerates decomposition of matter, and wild pigs are natural seed distributors. For example, in California, species richness was reduced in rooted areas in the first year of disturbance, but increased thereafter, often exceeding the richness of undisturbed control areas.

Yet, 120 of our wild pigs were culled between 2012 and 2013.

We look forward to working closely with the government on exploring and implementing alternative long-term humane solutions that will address both public and animal protection concerns.

Note: We will be sharing more of the survey results every week! ACRES chose to partner Millward Brown for this survey as they are experts in the field of market surveys and they ensured that the survey methodology was unbiased, scientific and representative.
