Leash-training cats is a little more complicated than working with dogs. From the start, you need to use a harnessor walking jacket,nevera collar. Harnesses distribute pressure and keep your feline friend secure. Collars present choking hazards, and they can slip off, especially if your cat is stressed or frightened and attempts to bolt. The harness should have a leash attachment point at the back not at the neck. Make sure to fit the harness snugly but not too tightly, and give your cat time around the house to get used to it, but be sure to supervise her so you can intervene if she gets into trouble.
Take your time when it comes to teaching your cat to wear a harness safely. Instead of plunging right in, leave it around the house for your cat to sniff. Handle your cat and the harness at the same time, rewarding your cat with pets and treats so she associates the harness with positive experiences. Place the harness on her without fastening it to get her used to the sensation, and only put it on when shes totally comfortable. Once she gets used to the harness, you can attach the leash but dont do anything with it just yet. Let her drag it around the house (with supervision) so she can feel confident and in control.
