WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU SEE AN INJURED MACAQUE?
It is very important for members of the public to know that macaques live in close knit family groups. Instinctually, if an individual is injured, the rest of family members will stay nearby to help or protect him/her from any potential threats this could mean from another animal, including us humans.
They will be very distressed, hence, it is advisable for members of the public not to make any attempts to handle the injured macaque by him or herself. Macaque rescues do not take place on a frequent basis in Singapore, but when there is a need to intervene and help an injured wild macaque, members of the public can assist greatly by following the steps below.
Here is how YOU can help:
Step 1: Alert the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team by calling the 24-Hour ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline 97837782.
Step 2: Inform the rescue officer of the location, the type of injury sustained by the macaque and how many other macaques are present. If you are able to take a picture of the macaque from a distance, you can send it to the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Hotline too.
Step 3: If you are able to wait until the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team arrive, you can keep an eye on the condition of the macaque and alert the team should the macaque move away from the location. You can also advise members of the public to keep a safe distance from the scene.
