This week, Pardus, a rescued leopard tortoise in our care, got to experience life outdoors at our outdoor Sanctuary Area. He had a great time! He immediately started chomping down on grass and was very active.
Pardus had been rescued after he was found abandoned at an HDB stairwell. He was in our quarantine for some time, and while there he didnt seem to show any interest in his enclosure mates, Amber and Lola.
At ACRES, we are careful when housing animals, to ensure that we dont mix different species in the same enclosure. But Pardus and Lola are a unique case for whom, although both species are different (Lola being an African spurred tortoise and Pardus being a leopard tortoise), they are both from Africa where they can be found in the same regions in certain areas, in countries including Ethiopia and Sudan.
As well as being from the same part of the world, African spurred tortoises and leopard tortoises share another similarity: they are both among the largest species of tortoise. African spurred tortoises are the third largest, and leopard tortoises are the fourth largest.
It will probably be a few more weeks before we can move Pardus outside permanently, but in the meantime he will have lots of visits to the sunny outdoors! We hope that Pardus will get along with Amber and Lola in the long run and will be able to share their enclosure.
