MEET LEO, A LEOPARD GECKO!

Leo, an albino leopard gecko, was most probably abandoned by his owner after being illegally kept as a pet in Singapore, or he could have escaped.

Leopard geckos are found in the dry and desert regions of South-Asia. This includes places such as Iran, down to parts of North-West India. The black spots on their body and their habit of stalking prey have given them their name: leopard gecko. Leo, however, lacks these spots as he is an albino morph. This means that he was probably captive-bred, and then illegally smuggled into Singapore, or he could have been bred here by someone illegally keeping leopard geckos.

Unlike many other animals that are either diurnal or nocturnal, leopard geckos are crepuscular, which means they are most active at, and usually hunt during, dusk and dawn. They grow much larger than the common geckos we find here in our homes.

Unfortunately, Leo has a poor appetite at this point in time. This is probably due to his stressful ordeal being kept as a pet then abandoned. We have just created a new enclosure for him, with a good mix of substrates. He has shown increased levels of activity over the past week, and we hope that his appetite will improve soon.

Leo is a good example of how, even if wild animals are bred in captivity, they can still show signs of stress from being caught up in the exotic pet trade, from captivity itself to escaping/abandonment.

Sadly, as a captive-bred individual, there is little chance of him ever being truly wild. But we will do our best to give him the space and environment he needs to display his natural behaviours. Ultimately, the best thing to help these animals is for everyone to stop keeping wild animals as pets, so that such individuals are not bred in the first place.
