LETS CATCH UP WITH KATHORA, AN OLD FRIEND.

Back in 2014, we wrote a Facebook post about a turtle we rescued in Pasir Ris, who had been run over by a vehicle. The poor animal had suffered severe injuries to her carapace, and the trauma had probably caused a permanent dent in her shell as well. Kathora has since come a long way, and is now able to eat and swim independently. She spends most of her time basking in the sun at our sanctuary and showing a 24/7 smiley face to all of us. (:

Kathora is a Chinese stripe-necked turtle, also known as a golden thread turtle, and she has an interesting -and sad – fact about her. Chinese stripe-necked turtles are classed as Endangered on IUCNs Red List of Threatened Species. Due to habitat destruction, poaching for traditional medicine, introduction of invasive species into their natural habitats and the exotic pet trade, Kathora and the rest of her species are one step away from becoming critically endangered. A large number of freshwater turtle species in Asia are facing the same threats and are at risk of the same fate. Let us all spread awareness about the plight of these animals, and start to recognise the problems that these animals are facing. And do something to help them!

You can play an educational role by spreading the word about how the exotic pet trade is causing so many animals to suffer and so many species to head towards extinction. You can speak up about how many of the wild animals who are sold as pets are ultimately abandoned to their fate, and how releasing invasive species disrupts native ecosystems. You can spread the message that wild animals are not pets!
