Mira wrote to me about a female cat she rescued while the cat was pregnant. The cat has already delivered and has just about finished nursing her 5 kittens (there were 7 kittens but two died). Mira wanted to get the cat spayed once and for all because the cat had given birth many times.
Mira also noticed that the cat was "wobbly" (like Parkinson's Disease, she said).
Besides her own 5 surviving kittens, this cat (named Tam Tam) is also nursing a foster-kitten. This foster-kitten is the last remaining kitten from a litter of six where their own mother had refused to nurse them as she has an earlier litter. So, the six kittens were handed over by a friend to Mira and Mira looked after them. Unfortunately, five of them died mysteriously, one by one. Their eyes were already open and they appeared to be well, but they suddenly collapsed and died within 6 hours, one by one.
The photos are a bit blur as my camera battery failed me today....
The 5 siblings and one foster-sibling.
Mira even brought her own e-collar just in case it is needed. This is the first time I've seen such a fashionable one. What will they come up with next?
Here's Tam Tam (she is a tortoiseshell).
We watched her for her "wobbly"ness.
Mira says Tam Tam has ten nipples. The vet checked and there is no more milk. Mira also says Tam Tam has begun kicking her kittens away. So, Tam Tam can be spayed already, but what about her wobblyness?
Tam Tam appeared to be healthy enough to be spayed, but the wobblyness is a concern.
The senior vet took one look at Tam Tam and said it's ataxia. Not encouraged to spay if we can wait.
The cause of the ataxia could be due to several possibilities. Mira said Tam Tam's son is also ataxic. One possibility is that both mother and son could have taken something poisonous (or been poisoned) and the poison has affected the brain. Ataxia is neurological.
Long discussion cut short, the plan is to put Tam Tam on Neurobion and see if there is any improvement or the condition remains stable. Then, we shall re-assess the case again after 3 weeks. Mira is prepared to keep Tam Tam indoors so that she will not mate should she come on heat anytime soon.
Now, the six kittens...they all had mange, but it isn't serious. At this age, it's too risky to give them Ivermectin, so the mange treatment can wait. All six were dewormed. Some of them had eye discharge and were given an eye ointment.
Mira says all these kittens are for adoption. If interested, please contact Mira at mia.katz.my@gmail.com.
Here are their photos:
This tabby is the foster-sibling.
Time to go home now...
We shall see Mira and Tam Tam in 3 weeks' time, and maybe even Tam Tam's son. Today's treatment is sponsored from our funds.
