KEEP THEM WILD AND FREE: LARGE PYTHONS
Giant snakes – such as the Burmese python and reticulated python – can grow to a length of 6 metres the height of 4 humans! And they can weigh 200 pounds or more. They urinate and defecate as much as a horse does, and you can expect to be caring for them for more than 25 years one quarter of your lifespan.
All too often, want-to-be owners purchase these large snakes, ignorant or in denial of the immense effort and financial outlay needed. Then, they desperately attempt to discard their pets once they realise how unrealistic and financially onerous it is to keep them.
Pythons require the warmth of the sun for digestion, and a large enclosure to for any decent range of movement. Can home-dwellers in Singapore give them the environment, sunlight and space to meet their basic needs? The answer is clearly no. It is inhumane to keep them as pets, in addition to it being illegal to do so in Singapore.
Improper housing or handling have also led to cases of injury and fatalities among owners or other people. And it does not help that these smart animals are excellent escape artists due to their body structure and strength.
It is neither cool nor responsible to them, you, or your family members to keep giant snakes as pets.
