The environmental movement would not be the same without a womans touch. Recognising the importance of women in conserving the unique marine resources of the Coral Triangle, the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) Women Leaders Forum (WLF) Earth Hour Awareness Talk in Kudat, Sabah was held last Saturday.
Organised by WWF-Malaysia and funded by USAID and the Coral Triangle Center, the aims of the awareness talk include to highlight the roles of women in nature conservation through case studies and providing a platform for women in nature conservation to know each other. It featured 4 speakers from grassroot organisations who are championing for the environment in the proposed Tun Mustapha Park in Sabah a globally-significant priority conservation area in the Coral Triangle which is threatened by overfishing, destructive fishing and pollution. WLF in Malaysia hopes to serve as a dynamic peer-learning network that share best practices in marine resource conservation as well as a platform to build the capacity of women as environmental custodians.
