Mama is a female cat who was treated for faucitis a few weeks back. She recovered but lately, had trouble eating again.
Gum disease is usually viral in nature.
The vet checked the inside of Mama's mouth - yes, the ulcers are back again, but not as "cauliflower"-like as before, that means, it's just beginning again.
We had to test Mama for FIV and FeLV. If it's positive, we can start her on the RetroMAD1. I just went down to the lab today to get a small amount for our Sporo cat, Puteri, and another TVT-dog.
So we had to get some blood sample from Mama. Only two drops would do.
For some reason, Mama's veins were so hard to draw blood from. It happens with some animals, including humans, too.
It finally took six attempts and three vets, before the 2 drops of blood could be drawn.
We waited for the results. It came fast - the two lines appeared. Mama is FIV-positive, but negative for FeLV.
So, Mama was given her first dose of RetroMAD1 today. She'll be on it for a few weeks and we hope her gum condition will improve.
FIV-positive used to be terminal, but RetroMAD1, I was told, has been successful in treating many symptomatic FIV+ cases. It doesn't produce "zero reversal", ie. from positive to negative, but the animal is well. For us, that is good enough. Being well and not suffering is definitely a lot better than being dead.
However, RetroMAD1 does not work once organ failure has already set in.
