A Soi Dog Ambassador Retires: Domonic Moves To Canada
On the day before he left us for good, Domonic’s sunscreen was applied for the last time and he greeted his final visitor later that afternoon.
After years of being the only dog allowed to roam freely around the shelter grounds, Domonic retired from his position as Soi Dog ambassador and “meet and greet” representative in order to move to his new home in Canada.
Domonic spent nearly 9 years at our shelter, arriving totally hairless and with completely black skin. It is widely believed that he is the son of another former resident, (Momma) who came from the same area in exactly the same condition, and who was also suffering from an under active thyroid gland, which gave them both above average waistlines.
Part of Domonic’s daily treatment included the generous application of high-factor sunscreen to prevent sunburn, something that hopefully won’t be quite so badly needed in his new home. He has been adopted by Lisa, a vet nurse from Canada who volunteered at our shelter and fell in love with him.
We all love Domonic, but after lots of emails and conversations, it was agreed we could not deny him a forever home just because we’d all miss him. That said, saying goodbye to him was not easy, and there were many tears shed when the time came to do so.
Staff and long-term volunteers took it in turn to spend time with Domonic as he sat in the car park, wondering what all the fuss was about. His crate was prepared and loaded on to the truck destined for the airport. With a final kiss from a tearful Khun Dow, Domonic was lifted into the crate and quickly made himself comfortable.
The crate was closed securely and then the truck door was shut. Parting like this is bittersweet, but Domonic deserves his own forever home just as much as every other dog at our shelter, and the best of days now lie ahead for him.
Happy in that knowledge, we waved our goodbyes as a Soi Dog legend left the shelter to start the long journey to his new life.
All that remained was a discarded bottle of sunscreen and the memory of Domonic forever in our hearts.
