KEEP THEM WILD AND FREE: STAR TORTOISE

This is the second segment of our series on the illegal keeping of wild animals as exotic pets in Singapore.

Indian star tortoises are coveted as pets because of the attractive star-like patterns on their shells. They may grow up to 15 inches in length and weigh up to 7 kg. They are at risk of becoming extinct in the wild if the trade in individuals captured from the wild to be sold as pets continues.

ACRES has rescued scores of Indian star tortoises from the illegal exotic pet trade in Singapore, many of whom have been abandoned and have suffered severe ill-health as a result. Many tortoises must undergo weeks of intensive care before they are well enough to venture outdoors in our Outdoor Sanctuary Area. Sadly, many will never fully recover, but what we can give these special tortoises is a second chance at life. And we plan to repatriate the healthy tortoises back to India if this can be arranged.

You can help our rescue efforts by sponsoring a star tortoise at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC) through our Animal Benefactor programme! Find out more at http://www.acres.org.sg/support-us/be-an-animal-benefactor.html.

Save wild animals from the illegal pet trade. Report the illegal sale and keeping of wild animals in Singapore to ACRES by calling our Wildlife Crime Hotline at 97837782, or sending an e-mail to info@acres.org.sg
