Baby Vervet Monkey Is Safe With Colobus Trust

Harmony Fund’s own Jenny Desmond, who resides in Africa, is currently acting as “mom” to a lovely little infant vervet monkey called Laila. Laila, a victim of the illegal pet trade, came to Colobus Conservation very young, sick and severely dehydrated. It is likely Laila’s mother was killed and she was kidnapped to be sold on the black market. After being kept by the people who bought her for almost a week and given only cow’s milk and bread, she was finally surrendered to Colobus Conservation’s rescue centre, desperately in need of help. Colobus Conservation promotes the conservation, preservation and protection of primates, in particular the Angolan colobus monkey and its associated coastal forest habitat. Once with Jenny and her family, Laila was able to receive the twenty four hour physical and emotional care she needed and, happily, she is now thriving! At this young age, Laila still needs the full time care of a foster mom but part of her days are now spent visiting the centre’s “nursery group” where she has the opportunity to learn natural monkey behaviors and survival skills as the first step in the long road to being released back into the wild.
