OUR WILD NEIGHBOURS: PLANTAIN SQUIRREL
Have you ever spotted them, leaping from tree to tree?
Meet the plantain squirrel (Callosciurus notatus), also commonly known as the oriental or the tricoloured squirrel! These squirrels can be spotted on our sunny island quite frequently, unlike the cream-coloured giant squirrel, which is very rare or perhaps even extinct in Singapore, with no recent sightings of them in the wild.
The plantain squirrel is about 20 30cm in body length, with an equivalent tail length matching up! Greyish brown in colour, with a chestnut belly, these squirrels feed mainly on fruits, leaves and the occasional insect or bird egg.
Despite being rather small in size, they have a huge appetite, being able to devour fruits much bigger than themselves. Love what you read so far? Try looking out for them in the wild the next time you are taking a walk in a park, garden, nature reserve or sometimes even car parks!
Let us keep these lovely plantain squirrels a part of our native wildlife, for us and for our future generations!
