Retired Police Saves Dog With CPR

JUPITER, Florida Retired New York police officer Tom Carey was fishing at Jupiter Beach on Wednesday when he heard a woman screaming.
Martha Brox said her 8-year-old Brussels Griffon Oscar Wilde got caught by a wave and swept into the ocean. “He went under, I couldnt find him, Im screaming, he popped up but he was floating he didnt look like he was still with me,” said Brox.
Carey ran over and shook Oscar and pumped his chest a few times. Oscar’s eyes were glazing over and he didn’t respond. So Carey decided to give him mouth to snout resuscitation, and began breathing into the dog’s nose while crouched in the surf.
“I had him there, so I was able to work on him, I was on my knees, some waves came over my back,” said Carey.
After almost 10 minutes, Brox said she believed it was all over, but Carey said he could hear the grief in her voice so he kept going. “I didnt want him to die and I wasnt going to give up,” said Carey.
Finally Oscar spit up a little foam and moved a leg. Carey grabbed him and Brox and her other dog and drove the the nearest veterinarian’s office. “His tongue was hanging out, he was purple, not showing any signs of life,” said Dr. Lazlo Sinko about Oscar.
Sinko gave the dog oxygen and within minutes he became more pink and began breathing. Sinko said without Carey’s CPR and mouth to snout resuscitation, Oscar wouldn’t have made it.
“Absolutely, it doesnt matter what I would have done if Tom hadnt done what he did, it would have been too late,” said Sinko.
Brox took Oscar to Veterinary Specialty Hospital in Palm Beach Gardens where he spent the night in an oxygen chamber and on fluids. She and Carey met there Thursday morning and hugged.
“We’re best friends now,” said Brox. “We’re going out to dinner with our spouses.
With Oscar just fine, Martha and Tom are new best friends forged over a little dog’s touch and go with life.
