LAST CALL: Open position for Program Assistants in hawksbill turtle conservation program in Malacca.
Regarded by many as the most beautiful of all marine turtles due to the striking pattern of their shell, hawksbill turtles have been visiting Malacca’s beaches every year to nest. This population is important as it is the largest nesting congregation in Peninsular Malaysia numbering 400 nests every year. One of WWF-Malaysia’s objectives is to protect the hawksbill turtle population of Malacca by conducting nesting monitoring during the turtle nesting season (April – September) in partnership with Department of Fisheries Malacca.
Position: Program Assistant
Working Location: Malacca Field Site
Contract Period: April – September 2015
Responsibilities:
- Beach patrol (8.00 pm – 5.30 am) at nesting beaches in Malacca to monitor and collect data on nesting turtles.
- Assist in hatchery management activities.
- Assist in community education and engagement activities.
- Assist in tracking hawksbill hatchling dispersal pattern in nearshore waters using kayak.
- Assist in collection of data on stranded turtles.
- Assist in production of reports and collaterals.
Requirements:
- Fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Proficient in Bahasa Malaysia as the work requires candidates to work together with local communities.
- Working experience in turtle conservation projects is an added advantage.
- Possesses valid driving license and is capable and confident in driving manual vehicles.
- Able to work with minimal supervision
- Good interpersonal skills and able to work as a team as well as work independently.
- Good understanding of current environmental and conservation issues.
- Computer literate (MS Words and Excel).
