OUR WILD NEIGHBOURS: WILD BOAR
Were very lucky in Singapore to share our island home with a huge variety of wild animals, although many of these animals are rarely encountered and remain somewhat of a mystery to many people.
Well be sharing information about our fascinating wild neighbours every Wednesday, so that we can start to understand them better, starting with wild boars!
Wild boars are medium-sized animals. They live in groups (called sounds), and they are usually nocturnal, being more active at night.
Wild boars are able to survive in different habitats, such as grasslands and the tropical rainforest, with the deciduous forest being the favourite dwelling place of these charismatic omnivores.
Their bodies are covered with a double coat, with the top layer being harsher then the undercoat. Piglets have brown fur covered in creamy coloured stripes, helping to provide camouflage for these vulnerable young ones. Their stripes will begin to disappear when the piglets reach 4-5 months old and, by one year of age, the piglets will have the same coat as the adults!
Did you know that domesticated pigs and wild pigs are close relatives?
