Weekly Edu-Tip: Weaning very young animals
Kittens or puppies which have lost their mother and are too young to eat solid foods, have to be fed milk from a bottle every three to four hours. You can purchase a specialised milk power for animals, as well as suitable milk bottles or droppers from any pet store.
Do ensure the milk is slightly warm, but not too hot. You will need to hold the young animal by the scruff of its neck, upright, whilst putting the syringe/bottle into its mouth.
Generally, kittens or puppies that have not yet opened their eyes will have to be fed every three hours or so. They will usually wake up from sleep and cry (like babies do) when they are hungry. As they get older (about 3 to 4 weeks), the timing between feeding intervals can be increased, e.g. at four weeks of age, they can be fed once every four to five hours instead.
