KEEP THEM WILD AND FREE: SLOW LORIS
Here begins a series on the illegal exotic pet trade in Singapore. Tune in every Saturday for features on the beautiful wild animals that we are – with your help working hard to keep wild and free, and not kept as pets.
In todays segment, we feature the lovely, wide-eyed, highly endangered slow loris.
Illegal poaching for the exotic pet trade is driving the slow loris to extinction. As they may inflict a toxic bite, slow lorises often have their sharp teeth brutally cut or pulled out after capture from the wild, commonly resulting in death by infection. Jungle Gremlins of Java depicts the plight of slow lorises captured for the exotic pet trade: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00nj7sl.
Sadly, slow lorises have been found being illegally kept as pets in Singapore. Just last year, a Singaporean was heavily fined for keeping 32 wild animals, including a slow loris, in an HDB flat.
We must not close our eyes to a very real problem happening at our doorstep.
Save wild animals from the illegal pet trade. Report the illicit sale and keeping of wild animals to ACRES by calling the ACRES Wildlife Crime Hotline at 97837782, or sending an e-mail to info@acres.org.sg
