AWRC UPDATE: POOR ERNIE IS NOT TOO WELCOME IN HER NEW HOMEYET!

Meet Ernie, a newly rescued giant Asian pond turtleand Audrey, who was not too keen on meeting her!

This week, we brought Ernie outside to our Main Sanctuary Area after shed completed her mandatory quarantine period, with hopes of putting her together with the other giant Asian pond turtles. Unfortunately, one turtle stood in her way: Audrey! Audrey may be small and shy around humans, but she is one big bully when it comes to entertaining newcomers! Audrey was in no mood to let Ernie share the water with her, and she so eloquently expressed her thoughts with her gaping jaws!

At ACRES, its a daily challenge to not only feed and take care of the rescued animals and keep their enclosures clean, but we also have to decide how to move forward progressively towards giving the animals the optimal level of welfare. This isnt always straightforward. Audrey has been with us for a few years now, so her territorial instincts mean that she will not accept Ernie inside her enclosure too easily. But we want Ernie to experience life outdoors. It will take a lot of time and patience to slowly introduce Ernie into the enclosure, until eventually each turtle will establish her own territory. In the long run, this will provide Ernie with an outdoor enclosure where she can bask and swim. We will slowly bring Ernie out for a bit longer each day, and eventually leave her for a full night in the enclosure, with frequent checks throughout the night by staff to ensure that no big fights occur.

Giant Asian pond turtles are a threatened species. They are heavily exploited for the meat trade and pet trade. Their numbers in the wild in South-East Asia are decreasing rapidly. We are currently working with relevant authorities on the possible repatriation of these turtles to suitable locations.

As we continue to ensure that Ernie safely gets along with Audrey in their outdoor enclosure, you too can help make a difference for the animals at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre. We are working on several projects which will help rescued animals like Ernie and Audrey, and your help is crucial to make them happen.
