Someone called me yesterday, quite frantically too. Apparently, a Golden Retriever had been dumped in her house compound. This someone explained that perhaps another neighbour had taken some other neighbour's Golden and dumped it on her.
I did not want to hear the complicated details of her neighbours' brawl. Can we just talk about the dog?
She kept saying she could not keep this dog as she already has her own dog. So, okay, let's concentrate on what we can do to help this allegedly dumped Golden.
I called the local shelter to ask if they could take in a Golden. Of course they could. Such dogs will get adopted very quickly.
So I offered this option to the someone. The someone said she has no transport. And, does she have a pay a surrender fee? Of course you'll have to pay a surrender fee, I said. The shelter survives on donations, please. Can you get someone to transport the dog tomorrow, I asked? No, she doesn't know of anyone, she said.
Alternatively, I could blog for adopters too, but I'd need a photograph of the dog. Can she send me a photograph, please? No, she couldn't, because she didn't know how. Get a friend to help, please.
There was no photograph.
I cannot simply blog about a dumped Golden Retriever without a photograph, I said. Who would believe me that there is actually such a dog? And people would want to see the animal that they are going to look after for the rest of their lives, right?
I asked her to hold on with the dog until this morning, I'll try to get transport to the local shelter. Can she hold on with the dog, feed it and keep it safe. She said she could, but what if someone accuses her of stealing the dog, she asked? That was a question I could not answer.
So while I was INSIDE the cinema watching The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, I was texting people for transport help to take the dog to the shelter this morning because the someone kept calling me on the phone (I did not answer as I was inside the cinema). I think she also does not know how to send smses. She has to call.
Finally, I texted Wani. Wani, can you help her, please? I want to watch my movie in peace. Wani said yes. So I texted the someone to contact Wani.
I presume communication ensued while I was watching the apes attempt to take over the world by storm.
After the show, the someone called me again. She said Wani had told her off. I am not at all surprised and I certainly don't blame Wani. Anyone would have done the same.
Apparently, Wani also asked for the same thing - just a photograph. And Wani asked her to hold on with the dog while we all looked for adopters. That's fair enough, isn't it?
There was no news from her all night.
This morning, I texted Wani - and so, was the photograph even sent?
Apparently yes. But it seems the someone's neighbour saw the dog, liked it so much, and adopted the dog last night itself.
And neither Wani or I was told of this.
Wani only found out when Wani called her again for the photograph.
So, that's how things went while Wani and I were texting people we know asking if they could take in a Golden not knowing that the Golden had already been adopted!
And I guess you'll understand why we prefer to deal with animals!
P.S. I texted the someone this morning to say she could have at least told me that the dog had been adopted. She just replied, after 3 hours, to say she had fallen asleep last night after the dog had been adopted.
Case closed...I hope!
