In Singapore it is illegal to keep most wild animals as pets, and for good reasons:
1. Wild animals do not make suitable pets. Wild animals who are kept as pets usually experience poor welfare, as it is very difficult to provide for their complex needs in our homes (e.g. their behavioural, social and dietary needs). Its also impossible to recreate their vast and varied natural habitats.
2. Many exotic pets are abandoned by their owners to die a slow death from starvation or disease. If they survive, they will unbalance the fragile ecosystems into which they are released.
3. Many of the animals traded to be sold as pets are captured from the wild. This leads to ecosystem imbalance and threatens the survival of endangered species.
4. Bringing exotic animals into a country means diseases could be introduced and spread to humans and domestic animals.
So, what about if the animals are not captured from the wild, but are instead bred specifically for the pet trade? Well, breeding them on farms is not a solution. Conditions on the breeding farms are usually very poor and, of course, even if a wild animal is captive-bred, he or she still retains wild instincts and is unsuited to life as a pet.
It is clear that wild animals are not suitable as pets.
Stay tuned for more information each Saturday about the exotic pet trade, the animals affected, and what you can do to help end the illegal exotic pet trade in Singapore.
For a start, you can help by sharing this information and remembering to never keep wild animals as pets. And if you are concerned about wild animals being illegally sold as pets in Singapore (the only wild animals allowed to be sold are red-eared slider terrapins, Malayan box turtles and green tree frogs), please call the ACRES Wildlife Crime Hotline at 97837782.
ACRES rescues scores of wild animals from the illegal exotic pet trade each year, and were currently raising funds to help provide them with the best care possible at the ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre (AWRC). Please donate now, to give them a second chance at life. Thank you! http://www.simplygiving.com/warmthforwalnut
