SINGAPORES NATIVE WILDLIFE: MYNAH BIRDS
As you spring clean your home today, have you ever wondered where our wild neighbours call home?
How about one of our most sighted neighbours- the mynah bird! Have you ever wondered what are their homes made of? A place to call home, a mynah birds nest consists of a variety of materials. Leaves, grasses, feathers and assorted items of rubbish are commonly used by these industrious birds to build their homes!
Most species of mynah bird are thought to mate for life. During the breeding season there is usually considerable competition for nesting sites. Favoured locations are in the walls and ceilings of buildings.
Squabbling neighbours, does that sound familiar? Did you know that battles sometimes erupt between occupants of a nesting site and the couple that wishes to evict them? Each partner grapples with its opposite number and contestants drop to the ground secured in each other’s claws. Bills are jabbed ruthlessly at the opponent. Finally, the defeated couple leaves to search for another site!
I couldnt imagine a home without animals, can you? Unknown.
