Sugar gliders are amazing little animals. Their scientific name, Petaurus breviceps, translates from Latin as “short-headed rope-dancer”, a reference to their canopy acrobatics!
This tiny native of Australia is sadly commonly kept and sold as a pet, and you may see sugar gliders being illegally advertised for sale in Singapore: it is illegal to buy, sell or keep sugar gliders here. Unfortunately, weve had to rescue many sugar glider victims of the illegal exotic pet trade, many of whom have been abandoned to their fate. But you can help to wipe out this trade. Let us know if you see sugar gliders advertised for sale in Singapore, by calling the ACRES Wildlife Crime Hotline on 97837782. And let others know that the trade in these beautiful creatures is illegal here.
Here are some facts about these little acrobats:
Sugar gliders are marsupials, with the female sugar gliders having a pouch on their belly in which to raise their newborn babies. They are nocturnal and usually live in large family groups. They have four fingers and opposable thumbs on their hands and feet. Male sugar gliders have one bald spot on their head, which is actually a scent gland!
