Bengal Cat Giveaway: Animal Welfare Groups Opposed

Thanks to alerts we’ve received from concerned Netizens, SPCA has been apprised of a Facebook post that offered to give away a Bengal kitten to a lucky person who has liked that page.
Our response to media queries, on this issue, reiterates our opposition to giving animals as presents/gifts:
“The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) vehemently opposes the giving of ANY live animal (regardless of animal type, breed, age or temperament) as a present/gift, in any contest or competition no matter the circumstances.
It is categorically unethical to give away a kitten as a prize, which this online endeavour in particular has clearly set out to do…..
Any pet animal needs, other than a safe and secure place to call home (and for its entire lifetime), regular and timely veterinary care and treatment, plenty of daily love and attention from its owner, regular grooming, and many other responsibilities required on the owner’s part. Is the ‘prize recipient’ ready to commit to the animal, in every way possible, for as long as 20-25 years (which dogs and cats can live up to)?
In view of the animal’s welfare, we urge all to say “NO” to getting or giving pets as presents. Animals’ lives are precious and not to be trifled with in the name of prize novelty or amusement.”
Thanks to Channel NewsAsia for seeking SPCA’s position, as well as that of our partner animal welfare groups like the Cat Welfare Society, with regard to this.
A Facebook post by a home breeder who said he would give a Bengal kitten away to one person has sparked outcries from animal lovers and welfare groups.
