The SPCA takes in close to 400 unwanted and abandoned animals every month and there are even more animals looking for homes. Pet owners can help reduce this problem by sterilising their pets, and by being responsible owners in ensuring that they can provide a forever home for the animal.
Sterilisation is an operation that removes reproductive organs to prevent the animal from creating more offspring. The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic, so the animal feels no pain. Unsterilised cats and dogs often suffer from many more ailments such as testicular tumours, ovarian tumours and chronic uterine infections. Sterilised animals, on the other hand, have a reduced chance of getting these diseases. Another problem faced by unsterilised animals is frustration caused by the compulsion to breed. Frustration does not help your pets mental health and a sterilised animal is also better behaved.
Sterilising your pet helps control overpopulation, improves the health of your pet and protects the health and safety of others by reducing the threat of rabies and bites caused by community (stray) animals.
