Joanne Lim called me on Friday evening (I was actually watching Harry Potter at that time!), requesting urgent help for an injured dog. I texted in the dark (trying not to let the light from my phone disturb the person next to me!) and had arranged for Joanne to bring the dog to our panel vet, but traffic was bad and Joanne was in Klang. Our vet was also closing already. So, Joanne called MDDB and currently the dog is at MDDB's vet. Joanne has requested financial assistance to help in the cost of surgery for this dog. She is also applying for PetFinder.my's medical assistance.
From Joanne Lim:
Dear Dr Chan, Poppy, a nursing mother dog of 7 puppies abt 5 wks old now at our factory. She was missing from the factory for since Thursday. I was asking around on Friday and 1 of my office colleague said Poppy was across the road while this colleague was waiting for bus on Thursday evening. So I went searching for Poppy right after work on Friday, across the roadside (which is the main Jalan Kapar road) near a pedestrian crossing. I kept calling her name n couldn't find her. I almost gave up but then I went under the pedestrian crossing, calling her again. Then at the very end corner under the pedestrian bridge n dark, I saw a tail wagging but I couldn't see whether it is her. I cant get in so I kept calling n she moved a couple of steps out, that's when I know it's Poppy n she was limping with her right hind leg. She has bruises n wounds all over her head, chest n stomach area. I suspect she was hit by vehicle on Thursday itself n was not able to cross the road again to go back to the factory, n hide under the pedestrian crossing. I tried to make her to walk with me to go back to the factory but she stopped after abt 10-15 steps with me. Then I had to called the workers to help to bring her back to the factory. I gav her water n some rice. She seem weak n her injured leg seem broken. Then that's when I called u. Thanks for arranging with the vet that day, I called the clinic after that but she said the vet said they were not able to wait as they have something on later. So in a split second, I decided to call Wani of MDDB since I have her number (she called me regarding Queenie's case few wks ago). I explained to her n she asked to send Poppy to their vet in Klang. Traffic was bad as it was Friday evening n we reached at 7pm. Vet said that it is a hip bone fracture n suggested inserting a plate or pin depends on the X Ray result. X Ray was taken soon after that n it showed the hip bone fracture and a pin has to be inserted to let the bones grow n join back together. Recovery will take 3 months. For the 1st month, Poppy must be tied/confined but she does not need any special care according to the vet. I'm still checking whether any1 here in the factory can foster her. Vet has advised not to delay too long as if the bones join back before the surgery then the bone has to be broken up before the vet can insert the pin. Cost of surgery would be RM400-600 depends on the condition after opening up. |
Poppy has been boarding at the clinic since Friday and I have agreed that Wani will arrange for the operation. Also Poppy seems weak n these few days, Wani has requested clinic to give her wet food to make her body stronger. Today during lunch time, I have visited her n found out fr the clinic staff that the operation will be this afternoon as they have told me not to give her the food that I've brought with me. They will feed it to her after the operation. Poppy's pups have been fed by few ppl here with rice and I feed them with milk + kibbles. They would be OK since they have learned to eat solid food since 2 wks ago. Attached are 2 pics I took with my hp in Thomas clinic last Friday. Sorry I did not managed to snap the x ray. I am still waiting for the x ray pic from Wani and will forward once I get it. Thank you.
The latest updates is that Poppy was too weak to undergo surgery yesterday. We shall wait for updates today.
Joanne says MDDB will partially subsidise the cost, and has requested for subsidy from us as well. She has also applied for PetFinder.my's medical assistance and will also be raising funds from her friends.
It is really good that we can all work together to help with the cost of the surgery so that it will not weigh so heavily on one single NPO or the rescuer herself. If the cost is RM600, it would only come up to about RM150 from each party.
Meanwhile, we hope Poppy will regain her strength and health soon.
