IS ICE MELT REALLY DANGEROUS FOR PETS?
Most ice melt products contain sodium chloride or calcium chloride, both of which can irritate paws and be toxic to your pet in relatively small quantities.
“This particular salt can move from the bloodstream into the spinal fluid,” reports Chrystal LeMaster of VCA All Pets Animal Hospital. “Where salt goes, water follows. That means the brain will be surrounded by too much water, potentially creating serious neurological problems such as seizure and coma.”
It goes without saying that pet guardians should use one of the pet friendly varieties of ice melt on their walkways, but your dog will probably be exposed to more caustic chemicals during your walks. Even if you don’t see the ice melt, it may still be on surfaces. A dog or cat could experience vomiting or diarrhea from licking contaminated paws. So always wipe your pets paws with a moist washcloth when he comes in and don’t allow your dog to drink from puddles near the road.
SHARE with other pet guardians please.
