Lilac was an injured pet, brought in by her owner to the vet's. Her leg was broken and the owner wanted her euthanised. Two rescuers intercepted and called me to ask if we could sponsor Lilac's surgery.

An extremely long and complicated story cut short, for the sake of saving Lilac's life, I agreed to sponsor but someone would have to take responsibility for Lilac after the surgery. One of the rescuers agreed to foster Lilac before returning her to the owner.

The owner's sister called me shortly after that saying they did not have the financial means to pay for the surgery.

Lilac was at the vet's for many weeks as she still could not walk after the IM-pin surgery was done. A second surgery had to be done to correct it.

When Lilac could finally be discharged, we settled the bill. I texted the owner, and she did not reply at all.

The fosterer took Lilac home and has been looking after and rehabilitating Lilac ever since. It has been more than a month now. There is no news from her owner at all.

Lilac achieved a milestone today by jumping on top of a stool. She still walks with a slight limp, though.

We seriously wonder if the owner even wants her back.

If I'm ever reborn as an animal, I think I'd rather be a stray than to be an abandoned pet. At least I wouldn't have to suffer the heartache of being dumped by my owner.
