MIDNIGHT DISASTER STRIKES YOUR HOME

How Would You Get Your Pets to Safety?

What would you do if a disaster were to strike during the night? Though none of us like to contemplate this, a few of us reading this post will actually encounter a fire, tornado, or similar emergency during the night. How will we get our pets to safety?

A few years ago I survived a brutal ice storm. My home is surrounded by towering pine trees that began to snap, one by one. Each tree top that fell down weighed enough to slice through the house like a knife through butter. It started at about 9pm, and within an hour, the devastation was in full swing. I remember holding my daughter in one arm and running back and forth through the house in between crashes, grabbing one panicked pet at a time and running them down to the basement. We had a black foster kitten at the time, and it was anguish to search for her in the dark. The crashing didn’t subside until 6 am the next morning, and by then, our community looked like like another planet. It was an ice encrusted wasteland, destruction everywhere. Though we didn’t have heat for over a week and needed a chainsaw to even make it down the driveway, we were able to stay in our home with our pets through the ordeal.

How many of you have a plan? Do you have all your pets sleep in your room with you? Do you keep carriers at the ready for your cats? A leash instantly at hand for the dog? Have you thought it over or discussed it as a family? Your plan or insight may just help save someone else’s furry family members. Please take a moment to comment and join the conversation.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
