DOGS RESCUED FROM WARZONE

If it weren’t for all of you, I simply don’t know how the dogs of Donetsk would stay alive. The animal shelter in this Ukrainian city, close to the Russian border, is trying to care for hundreds and hundreds of dogs and cats. Two grants have already gone over to the shelter and a third is planned for Tuesday.

Among the recent rescues were an elderly dog suffering from mange and a dachshund puppy with broken front paws. The puppy lost his guardian, a young woman, was hit by a car and lost her life. Her family refused to care for the dog who was also hit, but survived. Because the Donetsk animal shelter doesn’t have basic equipment such as an x-ray machine, they were at a loss as to what to do with the dog. Nearly all veterinarians in the region fled months ago. The only choice was to undertake a daring journey to bring the dog all the way to Moscow.

This week, one of the shelter’s volunteers was wounded by shrapnel in the stomach and is now in the hospital.

Conditions in and around the city are perilous and we will do our best to support the shelter in any way we can.

THANK YOU ALL for the love & support you are sending in this very special animal rescue mission.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
