For this week’s update on animal care, we are going to cover on a recently rescued tortoise. Some of you might know Lola, our African Spurred tortoise. Recently, we rescued another African Spurred tortoise but this lady turned out to be much bigger than Lola.
African Spurred tortoises are among top five largest tortoise species on Earth. They can grow up to a weight of 60 kilograms or more.
Like most other tortoise species, they have a high fiber diet of grasses and plant matter. They are native to Africa where they can be found in Sahara dessert region.
We have named her Amber and Amber will pose significant challenges to us in terms of housing. She is currently undergoing her quarantine period. Amber was rescued in the midst of our recent Sanctuary revamping efforts. We are currently modifying and expanding Lola’s enclosure where hopefully she can be put together with Amber.
Amber is around 18 Kilograms and will probably grow bigger in time to come. Hopefully she will be able to join Lola in a bigger enclosure in due time.
