Thank you for all your feedback with regard to Inuka, the polar bear at the Singapore Zoo. Since 2006, we have been working with the Singapore Zoo to address welfare concerns and the zoo has decided to phase out the keeping of polar bears.
Singapore Zoo has over the years been introducing and implementing measures to ensure Inuka receives a high standard of care. Today, we were invited to the Singapore Zoo and we are delighted to see that those measures have been consistently implemented and are still being practised.
With regard to the greenish fur coat, one of Inuka’s favourite past time is swimming in his deep pool. Under certain conditions the algae in water enter his hollow hair shaft resulting in the greenish tinge. This algae is harmless.
Inuka undergoes an annual health examination conducted by the Singapore Zoo veterinary department and the results from his last exam shows that he is physically healthy for his age.
Inuka will live on at the Singapore Zoo till attrition.
We thank the Singapore Zoo for the positive collaboration with ACRES and for our partnership in addressing zoo animal welfare concerns.
