This post has nothing to do with animals, but I thought some people might want to know about fraudulent emails supposedly sent by our banks.
A few days ago, I received an email from m2u. It looked absolutely authentic, EXACTLY like the usual email alert from m2u informing you that someone had banked in a certain amount into your account. Pls see below.
The email said a Goh Chin Chay had banked in RM200 into my personal MBB account for Victorine (Jacinta and Kelly's shelter in Ipoh, the shelter that we're helping to publicise for fund-raising).
But I am NOT collecting funds for Jacinta as I've given her account number in the posting, so why is this person sending the money to my personal account? But it was still possible, in case the person had heard about the appeal through a third party and wanted to donate to Jacinta by sending me the money.
So I checked my MBB and there was no such RM200 deposit on that day. I checked for two days and the entry was still not there.
Finally, yesterday, I called m2u hotline and was told this is a new scam. Now, they no longer send those "Your account has been blocked" emails because nobody falls for that anymore. They send the EXACT email alert from m2u, but the moment you click REPLY, it gives them total access to your account and they will withdraw whatever they can.
Scary, isn't it?
Never click REPLY to such alerts, fake or real. m2u has asked me to forward the email to them and they will put a stop that to link.
But with "advancement" of IT, woe betide us the day when even if we click the email open, we're doomed. Will that happen?
Like a friend told me recently, where is it safe anymore these days? Buy gold bars, he said, dig a hole in your garden and bury it. No, I said. I have a better idea, keep enough, donate the rest to charity. What is ours will be ours. What is not, is not. That's life.
So, I suppose there is no Goh Chin Chay and there is no RM200 deposit for Jacinta.
