My Cat Tends To Scratch My Furniture. What Can I Do?
Cats, being cats, might just scratch furniture, in order to keep their claws in shape, and not consciously intending to destroy household objects. At the same time, they are actually leaving a trace of their scent through their paws.
De-clawing the cat is not the solution as it renders the cat defenceless and is most cruel. SPCA is against this inhumane method. (Nearly two dozen countries including Australia, England, and Japan ban or severely restrict de-clawing surgeries. And many veterinarians in the United States refuse to perform the procedure.) Having a scratching post (at least one in the house!) is a simple solution that is hassle-free! Scratching posts (and/or scratching beds/rugs) are fairly economical and can be easily bought from pet shops. Ideally, you should have two or more scratching posts in your home. Make sure that theyre sturdy and tall enough to allow your cat to stretch (3 feet or taller).
Just ensure that the scratching post is, well, up to scratch!
