BEACH DOGS IN PERIL PLEASE HELP THEM BY JOINING THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TODAY!

Diggers and trucks clear away all that remains of hundreds of beach bars, restaurants and shops that have illegally cluttered and hidden Phukets beaches for years.

Their removal, part of the military governments war on corruption, has been welcomed by locals, expats and even the majority of tourists, who can now see Phukets beaches as they were 20 years ago.

Other than the owners and mafia who controlled the beaches, the only ones actually suffering as a result are the resident beach dogs, whose source of food has now disappeared. The sand and sea behind the dogs in the photo below was, only a week ago, totally hidden by the restaurant they called home.

Although not owned, the dogs, like dozens of others up and down the coast, lived a happy, free life living on scraps from the restaurant and tidbits from tourists. Some of the dogs have been taken by the restaurant owners but the majority remain.

Putting them all in shelters is not an option even if we had room, as the dogs are used to their freedom and putting them in a shelter would be like a jail sentence to them.

Soi Dog Foundation is therefore organising volunteers at each beach and providing food so the dogs are regularly fed.

Food for the dogs will be purchased each month and added to the 4,000 plus kilos already purchased under the Leone Cosens memorial feeding programme, which has supplied food to volunteers at temples and other locations on the island for many years.

It costs 500THB (16 USD/12 EUR/10 GBP) to feed one dog for a whole month and Soi Dog Foundation is completely reliant on donations to accomplish this.
