SURPRISE HAPPY ENDING FOR DOG IN HOT CAR

When my husband sat down in my car yesterday he noticed the claw hammer tucked beside the passenger seat. He said, “What’s that for?” And I told him, “That is for the day I find a dog in a hot car and have no other choice but to break him out.”

About an hour later, we made a quick stop at the local CVS pharmacy, and when we stepped outside, we found a van parked in the handicap spot out front with a little dog inside. My husband turned to my daughter and said, “Uh-oh. It’s hammer time.”

All joking aside, it was 80 degrees (26.6 celcius) and I was concerned. Though we have blotted it out for privacy reasons, the sign contained the driver’s complete cell phone number. The dog was barking but looked fine. Still, I wanted to see how long it would take for the driver to appear.

After about 3 minutes, I went inside the store and started walking the isles. I couldn’t find anyone there except one woman who said she was walking home.Just as I started to feel a bit anxious, an older man suddenly appeared at the front of the store, clearly headed for the dog. I stared at him, looking him up and down and he said “Hello.” with a warm and friendly voice.

I said, “Is that your van out front?” And instantly, he knew why I was there.

But what came next was a refreshing surprise. The man proceeded to thank me for looking out for his dog. “You’re a good person,” he said. “Thank you for caring.”

He walked outside with me and said that he has a rule that he never, no matter what the time of year, leaves his dog in the car for more than 5 minutes. He told me that he had an extra key made for very hot days and will leave the air conditioning running and lock the car from the outside. But he will not, under any circumstances, break his 5 minute rule.Then he proceeded to tell me about adopting the dog from the local shelter and say, “If you ever have a few dollars to spare or could bring them a bag of dog food, they could really use your help.”

He told me that he gotten a discount price at Walmart a while ago and was able to fill his van with 900 cans of dog food as a surprise gift for the shelter. His eyes said it all. He simply had to do something for all the dogs he couldn’t take home with him.

Thank goodness it wasn’t “hammer time” yesterday. But for all of you out there, please keep an eye on parking lots near you during hot weather. Your fast action may just save a life.

* Call the police.

* Make an announcement in the store.

* Do what you have to do.

But please don’t walk away.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
