Think Before You Adopt.

Regardless how we hope to find homes for all the homeless animals around us, do please take a moment to consider the forthcoming commitment and whether you are able to cope with the additional responsibilities.

Sure, you saw a pitiful puppy on the streets looking at you with doleful eyes and at that instant you just want to bring him back without thinking much. Or you visit the local shelter and saw a cute lil kitten that just cant stop mewing at you as if begging you to take her home, and the next thing you know, she is in the carrier following you home.

Adopting a pet though is a big decision. Before you make that decision to bring a furry friend into your life, take a moment to think over:

1. Why do you want a pet

2. Do you have time for a pet?

3. Can you afford a pet

4. Are you ready to deal with the problems a pet can cause?

5. Are you allowed to have pet at where you live?

6. Will you be a responsible pet owner?

7. And prepared to keep and care for the pet for his or her entire lifetime?

Sure, its a long list of questions. But a quick stroll through an animal shelter will help you understand why answering them before you adopt is so important.

Many of the shelters homeless animals are puppies and kittens, victims of irresponsible people who allowed their pets to breed. But there are at least as many dogs and cats at the shelter who are more than a year oldanimals who were obtained by people who didnt think through the responsibilities of pet ownership before they got the animal.

Let us share with you one of the many encounters we have had:

A few months ago, Chai Chai and Mei Mei (not their real names) were surrendered to our shelter as their owner claimed that his family need to move to elsewhere (out of country) and unable to bring along their pets.

Chai Chai and Mei Mei were then left in the shelter, having to cope with lives staying together with 600 over other dogs. One day, Mei Mei escaped from the shelter but miraculously, Chai Chai ran out and led Mei Mei back to the shelter. Lives continued at the shelter and soon after, an uncle came to the shelter and decided to give Chai Chai a home. It was sad having to separate both of them but the intention then was to hope Chai Chai had the chance to have a home again.

Mei Mei, however could not deal with her lost of her long time companion and eventually she started to refuse food and passed away.

Former owner contacted our shelter one day and ask for permission to view their dogs. Of course, we need to inform them that Mei Mei had already left us while Chai Chai is now in his new home. Nevertheless, Mdm. Tan managed to contact the uncle who adopted Chai Chai and helped set up a meeting for both parties with Chai Chai.

It was indeed a very touching and sad reunion. Touched, in seeing Chai Chai still showed unconditional love for his former owner the very moment he saw them, even after a brief separation. He even tried jumping into their in hope that he gets to go home with them. Sad, since Chai Chai will not be able to follow his former owner home. We do, however hope that Chai Chai will learn to accept his new owner and stay a happy life throughout.

We are writing this with no intention to let Public give their criticisms or to condemn anyone but rather to remind adopters to please, dont make the same mistake. Think before you adopt. Sharing your life with a companion animal can bring incredible rewards, but only if youre willing to make the necessary commitments of time, money, responsibility, and lovefor the life of the pet.

SPCA Seberang Perai

The SPCA Seberang Perai is a society registered in September 2005. Our primary aim is to reduce the population of stray animals or possibly a zero stray population in a humane manner. With lesser strays or no strays at all, the loving value of animals will be greatly increased and you can be sure that humans will shower more love for their pets and be responsible pet owners. The problem should not only be shouldered by our Society as the public must also understand the urgent need to control the pet population and give their whole-hearted support to all our projects for the undertaking to be successful. Then we will achieve a clean and hygienic environment for the community. As a no killing organization, we are embarking on a two-prong approach towards the problem i.e public education and sterilization of the stray animals.
