OVERHEATED STRAY DOG IS SAVED WITH LOVE

A stray dog with a body temperature of a whopping 108 was found in a field in Indio, California on Tuesday. Though clearly in distress, the dog at first refused to surrender and left the open field where he was found lying down. But determined Riverside County Animal Services officers Jason Salazar and Kyle Stephens corralled him on a nearby street and immediately began cooling him with water and reassuring him that they wouldn’t harm him.

The dog, estimated to be about 5 years old, was treated by veterinarians and technicians at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus. They used a kiddie pool, ice packs and alcohol on his paw pads. It took a team of people to restore the dog’s health and, one can only hope, his spirit.

The process of returning a normal body temperature can’t be done too quickly. It took about 45 minutes.

“It was very touch and go for a few minutes there,” Deputy Director Frank Corvino said. “We’re optimistic the dog will be OK.”

This dog had no tags or microchip.

This story is yet another reminder to all of us to please LOOK OUT FOR ANIMALS DURING HOT WEATHER. They’re counting on you to do the right thing.

Animal Rescue Chase

The Great Animal Rescue Chase celebrates the art of animal rescue with a worldwide race to rescue one million. It’s a free event, open to all, and is perhaps the only global animal rescue event aimed at helping any animal in distress, anywhere in the world. Our ambition is to create a culture of enthusiasm and pride in animal activism. We believe in teaching, by example, that there is a hero in each of us just waiting to be unleashed. Empowered animal lovers can not only save lives, but build the momentum for powerful animal welfare reform.
