About Chinas annual Dog-meat Eating Festival 2014, on this Saturday (21 JUNE, 2014) in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, SPCA Singapore has written to these relevant animal welfare agencies in China, and are awaiting their respective responses:-

- the Chinese Animal Protection Network (CAPN) &

- the World Animal Protection China (WAPC)

We have also written to the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China, in the Republic of Singapore, and sought the embassy’s endorsement in garnering the support of the CAPN and the WAPC.

SPCA Singapore has stated our objections to the slaughtering of about 10,000 dogs just for this occasion. In our letters to these agencies, we have expressed our support to the international community in wanting a total ban of this festival, right from the outset, stressing these:

“…. While we do recognize that this festival in Yulin has been a customary tradition, we feel strongly that, in an era of rapid globalization and modernization today, we would also need to CONTEXTUALISE this against the ever-growing relevance and importance of basic animal protection and welfare….

….Whilst certain traditions may still hold sway, somewhat, in this context, it is timely and crucial that the current approach of eating dog meat, as well as the glorification of this practice by certain factions, be re-thought and re-looked, through and through….”
