Latest update on SPCAs Appeal for Jail Term for Businessman convicted for Pet Neglect – No formal reply from Attorney-General’s Chambers yet
(Businessman Lim Soo Seng was fined S$10,000 the maximum fine imposed so far for clear cruelty against his pet dog Chilli that died of severe starvation, but in the aftermath of the sentence, SPCA pushed for a jail term too.)
The SPCA Singapore has, on 5 May 2014, written to the Attorney-General’s Chambers to ask for the imposition of a jail term but, at this point now, has YET to receive any formal reply. We would like to urge the authorities to get serious about fighting animal cruelty.
Given that this was one of the most severe cases of animal neglect and cruelty in recent years, a jail term, in addition to the fine, would have been a stronger preventive move against a repeat offence in future.
The court sentence FELL FAR SHORT of community expectations by not providing a deterrent to repeat offenders who can afford to pay the fine.
To this end, we have penned an open letter published in todays (9 June 2014) Straits Times Forum page, affirming our stance that a criminal offence of such a nature is NOT to be tolerated. We also express our support of Straits Times Forum reader Mr Joe Teo Kok Seah whose Forum Letter published on 3 June 2014 asserts that owners found guilty of not providing adequate and proper care to their pets ought to be punished more severely.
