SUNBURNS & CANCER: HOW TO PROTECT YOUR PET
Did you know your pet’s fur may not be enough to protect from sun damage.
“Just because a dog has a coat of fur, it doesnt mean that it is protected from the suns rays.” Dr. Laura Stokking, a veterinary dermatology told UT San Diego. “Even a thick fur coat isnt enough protection. Constant sun exposure can result in painful sunburns, skin ulcers, cancer and permanent skin damage. Some breeds are more susceptible to sunburn, like those that are fair skinned, white haired, short haired and have light colored noses.”
The difficulty is that fur coats do not evenly cover your pet’s body. The nose & muzzle and the area in front of the ears, as well as portions of the abdomen tend to have much more skin exposure”
“Too much sun can cause problems ranging from burns to cancer. Dogs and cats can get precancerous lesions called actinic keratoses, which can then progress to skin cancers such as squamous cell or basal cell carcinoma. Some dogs can develop tumors of the blood vessels called hemangioma,” Dr. Stokking continued.
Shade is the number one protection for your pet, particularly during mid-day between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. .Although it is NOT SAFE to apply human sunscreen, there are a few veterinary sunscreens available.
