CAN WE FIX THE ROOF FOR THIS SMALL RESCUE CENTER?
Danica Djurkovic in Serbia writes: “I need your help. I know that you and the Harmony Fund have helped me a couple of times already with a donation and I am so very grateful to you for that. I currently have over 50 adult cats, 9 small kittens, one tiny puppy and two adult dogs, ALL rescued from the streets or dumped in the village where I live in Savino Selo, Vojvodina Province, northern Serbia. I bought small house with large garden eight years ago, as I wanted to devote my life to rescuing unwanted cats and dogs primarily cats. The house is old, and it was in poor state of repair when I bought it. It was all that I could afford. I have spent a lot of money (what remained of my savings, after buying this house) and also I borrowed money from the bank, on vital repairs and renovations and a new toilet & shower-room, as old one was unusable, and also new septic tank. I am now heavily in debt, I only have a small pension, which is not enough for that number of animals.
However, the rear portion of my house, where over 20 rescued cats live, is in dire need of urgent repairs. The roof is leaking, and there is no roofing felt under the roof tiles and no insulation at all. There is woodworm in some of the roof beams also. The entire roof urgently needs replacing! I have obtained an estimate of the costs, and it seems it would cost, in total, $1,682 or 1,228 – half is the cost of materials, and half is the cost of labour. I am now 57 years old, my health is not all that good, and I cannot do this work myself but must pay someone to do it.
Please, if at all possible, I hope and pray that God and the Holy Saints will move you to help me and all my many cats! You must have seen on TV devastating floods in Serbia and all the damage the torrential rains have wreaked. There are many dead cats floating on the swollen rivers even! My friend lives in Belgrade, and it is very, very bad there, on suburb, with flooding up to second floor of apartment blocks! God be thanked, me and all my animals are safe, SO FAR, but more rain is predicted for Serbia next week. Many of my beloved cats are huddled miserably in their wet room, with the rain coming in through the leaking roof and the concrete floor also wet. I have to work very hard to keep mopping the water and try to keep all these cats as comfortable as I can.”
