A lot of the conflicts that occur between humans and macaques is due to the lack of awareness in reading them and knowing how to behave among them. Macaques use facial expressions to ‘talk’ to each other and to humans. For the next few weeks, the Macaque Team will bring you through a guide to the different Macaque facial expressions. Feel free to ask us anything and remember to spread the crucial knowledge you gain for the sake of the macaques and everyone!
Let’s start with ‘happy’ macaques for this week.
A happy macaque has a completely relaxed face, their eyebrows are not raised and their mouths are relaxed too. Sometimes, a macaque may look cranky or upset, but it really isn’t. Some macaques, especially females, have furrowed brows that make them look very cranky or mad.
Sometimes, ‘happy’ macaques ask you to groom them. Don’t! When a macaque gazes at you and ‘coos’ gently, he/she is asking to be groomed. Their lips will be a bit puckered when they make the sound. This means the macaque is very comfortable around you – but never ever try to make contact!
