Courageous Cooper Is Walking Again

My name is Cooper and Soi Dog has given me a second chance at life. If you havent met me yet, you can read my original story here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.678595915515480.1073742729.108625789179165&type=1

I am about 4 years of age and have grown up on the streets of Phuket. Life is not always easy for us street dogs but we have never known anything else. We face a daily battle to survive to find enough food and to stay safe. Every day that I woke up on the streets was another day I was lucky to be alive.

Just a few weeks ago, I thought my luck had run out. I was hit by a car while roaming the streets looking for food. The accident broke one of my front legs very badly and I was in terrible pain. There was nobody around to help me so I lay all alone on the road. I could hear other cars racing by and I was terrified another one would hit me. This was the worst moment of my life.

As I lay there, I saw a man approach. I closed my eyes and wondered if he was going to hurt me too. It was then I felt something Id never felt before. The man bent down and scooped me up, holding me safely in his arms. He took me away from the busy road and into his car. This man was Khun Jaroon, an Animal Rescue Officer from Soi Dog.

At the shelter, the vets examined my leg and fitted me with something called a cast. They told me they were going to do their best to fix my broken leg. They gave me antibiotics to stop infection and painkillers so my leg would not hurt anymore. They said I also had a fungal skin infection but they wanted to wait until I had finished the other medicine before they started treating it. Too much medicine at the same time would not be good for me.

Every time the vets changed my cast thing, they tried to get me to use my leg but it was very difficult for me. I just couldnt do it. The vets started to treat my fungal infection and this made me happy because I was itching a lot. One day, they told me that they would have to remove my bad leg, so that I could eventually walk and run around like other dogs.

I was asleep when this happened and so I felt no pain. Afterwards, the vets cleaned my wound every day and told me I would soon be better. One day, one of the lovely volunteers took me for my first walk. I was led slowly out of the shelter and into the sun. I was moving again and this made me wag my tail. It was the happiest moment of my life.

How different life would be for me, were it not for the Emergency Response Team. My story has a happy ending but there are so many other dogs and cats out there that wont get theirs without your help. Please visit https://www.soidog.org/en/ert/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=FBO_cooper2&utm_campaign=ert and make a promise to help them today.
