A Primal Treatfrom Aunty Joy (and BARF For Dinner)!
Joy dropped in this morning to visit.
She was on her way to babysit a few cats and had brought along some Primal nuggets.
Vincent was the first to detect the can of delectable treat in her bag and ransacked it.
So Vincent had a treat….
Then, the rest also asked for some.
Tabs and Cow waited to be served, but Indy helped himself to a whole nugget by putting his head into the can!
This was surprising as Indy normally does NOT eat Primal nuggets. He says it isn’t real “raw food” as it doesn’t have blood. Remember Indy loves liver and drinks blood? That’s his idea of “raw food”. Dehydrated raw food isn’t his cup of tea, but look…he was gobbling up nugget after nugget.
Hey Indy, how come you don’t eat Primal when I give it to you?
Bunny was asleep in the Clubhouse and only came in later.
The two girls, Pole and Cleo, didn’t dare approach. Tiger was afraid and stayed under the table and just watched
Together, they emptied half the can.
Thank you very much, Aunty Joy!
Please do come again!
And after Joy left, everyone asked for Primal so they had another round. Everyone except Indy, who came by, sniffed at the dehydrated nugget, looked at me (“You call THIS food?”) and went away. I was insistent so I went after him and offered it to him again. He sniffed at it and walked away again…
Strange fella….
Joy also brought some samples of BARF to let the cats try.
It looks interesting:
BARF = Bones And Raw Food
(or, Biologically Appropriate Raw Food, if you prefer a sophisticated sounding name, but a vet told me it’s the former!)
It’s for cats…
…and dogs.
Of my inside brood, I know only Cleo and Bunny eat raw food and Indy…well, Indy only eats liver and drinks blood (yikes!).
But I will offer to all of them for dinner and see how it goes…
And of course, to the PatioCats too!
From what I know, not every animal can take raw food, especially if they are adults and have grown up on kibbles or cooked food. You need a pretty strong stomach to digest raw food, so as with all new foods, it’s wise to give small amounts to test.
I tried giving raw food to Bunny & Friends a few years ago, and only Cleo, Bunny and Indy could take it. The rest simply refused to eat it. Not even a bite.
“Arggh…that’s not food!! It’s raw!!”
But it might be good to start young animals on raw food. After all, that’s the natural food of their ancestors in the wild. However, there are two schools of thought on this and the argument is…endless.
Ultimately…whatever works!
