Another piece of sad and shocking news today. Julie Pek texted to say that NoiNoi passed away suddenly. NoiNoi was spayed under our sponsorship more than a week ago. She was perfectly fine and had recovered from the spaying.
Yesterday, she was still eating and was well. Today, Julie had gone out for a while to buy catfood, and upon her return, she was about to let NoiNoi out of the cage when she noticed NoiNoi was lying down.
Then, NoiNoi stretched herself, went into convulsions and died.
It was sudden death.
I texted both our vets to seek an opinion. The vet who did the spaying said it could not be due to the spaying as it has already been more than a week. We know this too. Our other vet concurred and explained that even if it had been due to any complication arising from the spaying, it would have happened gradually, showing deterioration over a few days. This happened too suddenly.
The vet concluded that it was probably due to a deadly virus called Feline Panleukopenia, which can be fatal in cats and it can cause very quick death.
From Wikipedia:
Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), also known as Feline infectious enteritis, Feline distemper,[1] feline ataxia, or cat plague,[2] is a viral infection affecting cats, both domesticated and wild feline species it is caused by feline parvovirus, a close relative of both type 2 canine parvovirus and mink enteritis. Once contracted, it is highly contagious and can be fatal to the affected cat.[1] The name, panleucopenia, comes from the low white blood cell count (leucocytes) exhibited by affected animals.[
FPV can be prevented by vaccination.
We share Julie's sadness in the sudden passing of NoiNoi. NoiNoi was a stray who had wandered into Julie's back alley recently.
May NoiNoi be in a better existence now.
Thus is the sad plight of strays.
