A Puppy, A Rescue, A Surgery And A Home (a Sharing)

AnimalCare no longer provides medical treatment subsidy, so this is merely a sharing of what a few friends can do to help a rescuer with an injured dog he had picked up.
Two days ago, someone by the name of Jin wrote to me:
Hi Dr. Chan,
I witnessed a stray dog being hit by a car yesterday, I took the dog to a nearby veterinary for immediate medical treatment. The veterinarian informed that the dog might need to undergo a surgery soon to its injured leg which the surgery cost is around RM600-800.
I had seek advice from PAWS but they will only accept the dog after it fully recovers from it injuries. At the time being I have no intention to addopt the pity dog but I am willing to contribute partial of the surgery cost if needed to. Hence I was introduce by PAWS to seek your further advice if we can somehow work together to cure this pity cute dog. (The dog is currently being kept at my house until help arrives)
Hope to hear from you soonest.
Best Regards,
Jin
PAWS was not aware that we no longer subsidise medical cases, hence the case was referred to me.
Since Jin had included his hp, I thought I would call him and gauge the situation. Perhaps my friends are willing to chip in privately to help him out with this dog if I obtained more information.
So I called and learnt that Jin had already brought the dog (or rather, the puppy) to a vet and the vet said a surgery was needed. The vet had sent the puppy back with some medicines while waiting for Jin’s decision.
Jin was not given much information regarding the extent of the injury, etc. so I asked if Jin would like a second opinion from another vet. Jin immediately agreed as he wanted what is best for the puppy.
So I called one of the vets I know and made the appointment for Jin. I also explained to Jin that AnimalCare does not provide medical treatment subsidies anymore now (only neutering and vaccinations), but I could always ask my friends if they would like to chip in to help him out. No promises, though.
Jin sent the puppy to the vet I recommended and provided the following information:
Hi Dr. Chan,
Apologies for my late reply. Please find attached as picture of the unfortunate dog and following more detailed about the incident for your better understanding:
Injuries:
Distal Radius Fracture in back right leg when it was ran over in a “Hit & Run” accident last Friday evening in Rawang. (Attached Image 3 as the X-ray)
Healing Treatments:
A) To undergo Percutaneous Pinning surgery and input a cross pin onto the fractured part. This will be done by the vet you recommended.
B) If no surgery is done, high risk outcome which may cause Leg Length Inequality and also Joint Stiffness that will affect the dog’s future movements.
I have immediately agreed to proceed for the surgery to avoid any suffering for the dog in future. The dog is currently kept at the clinic and the vet had arranged to undergo it tomorrow (Monday) and it should be able to discharge by Wed/Thur. Total fee is still yet to be confirmed but it will range in RM800-RM850 for all the cost of the surgery (Anesthesia, Manipulation, medicines), X-ray, Boarding Fee.
Feel free to let me know should you are able to raise any contribution from your side and I will bear any remaining balance of overall cost.
Once again thank you for your kind effort.
Best Regards,
Jin Lim
Meanwhile, I had contacted a few friends to ask if they would like to help Jin’s puppy. Two friends (Martin Lui and “Cookie Monster”) agreed to chip in. I would personally chip in as well. It wouldn’t be much since Jin is willing to pay the balance. That’s a great sign of bearing responsibility.
This morning, I texted the vet to confirm the case and Cookie Monster helped me by paying a visit to the clinic to see the puppy and further verify the case.
Just now, the vet texted to inform me that the surgery has been done and the puppy is doing well.
The vet also texted over the following photos:
So I called Jin to tell him the good news and guess what…
Jin said he had discussed it with his wife and they have decided to adopt the puppy now!
Oh wow!
Isn’t that great?
The puppy will have a home now. Jin even asked about neutering (to be done later). I said AnimalCare will be happy to help out since the puppy is a rescue.
Cookie Monster, Martin and I pooled together RM400 and we have already paid the vet directly.
We wish the puppy a quick recovery and a happy life with Jin and his family.
So, AnimalCare no longer provides subsidies for medical treatment, but friends can still get together and help out worthy cases. Of course, you might have to do all your background checks since you will be dealing with total strangers (like in the case of Jin Lim – I don’t know him at all).
Trust your gut feeling and follow your heart. But of course, do the necessary verification, too. And we can all work together to help more animals.
